De la source au jardin La Fontaine de Nîmes

A garden born from a spring, the Fontaine de Nîmes has a long and rich history.
More than 2,000 years ago, the source of the Jardin de la Fontaine in Nîmes was home to a vast cult complex, the fruit of a new bond between the local inhabitants and the gods. A few centuries earlier, men and women had taken up residence on a hill topped by the Tour Magne, where they had formed a society. Rediscovered in the 18th century and redeveloped, the site became one of France's first public gardens. At times at the heart of the city, at other times on its bangs, the Fountain has always beaten to the rhythm of its inhabitants' lives.
This book offers a lively panorama of the history of La Fontaine, from prehistory to the present day.
The available documentation, some of it unpublished and up to date with current events, is placed in context to offer the first long-term history of one of the city's most evocative sites, which may even inspire the reader to get lost in it.
Edited by Véronique Krings and François Pugnière, the book tells the centuries-old story of the Fountain in text and images. Historians, art historians, archaeologists and architects have all contributed to this publication.
