Building on the foundation of a corpus of material consisting of more than 500 well-dated stone artefacts for the most part recovered from alluvial deposits, the author brings to our attention once more the importance of eastern Languedoc as an area full of potential in the search to trace the earliest human occupation of the western Mediterranean.
The volume begins with describing in detail the geomorpholoy, geology, and paleontology of the area, so that it can be understood in its totality. Comprehensive studies of the tooling of the artefacts follows, with detailed descriptions, drawings, and analyses of their morphology and characteristic technologies.
The second part of the study opens with a phasing sequence, followed by a synthesis of the technological development, before retracing the stages of Man's progress in the paleoenvironment of the delta for 1 million years, up until the end of the Rissian complex.
For the first time, an accurate inventory of the characteristics of the Rhodian quartzite industry and its chain of operations is proposed, based on a comparative study offering a wide perspective on the intra- and etra-European strata. An original thesis is put forward, on the basis of which several interpretations are developed that demand serious consideration.
This ambitious and thorough volume forms a new and useful work of reference for our understanding of the Paleolithic period, particularly in southern Europe. Clearly and fully illustrated, it will also be of great value for those seeking information on worked stone artefacts, providing a methodology for study and the various Acheulian forms.
