Historical archives and documents provide us with a fairly accurate picture of piracy and its actors during the 17th-18th centuries, a modern period often described as the apogee of this phenomenon along the coasts of America, in the Caribbean or in the Indian Ocean. However, the aspects of their daily lives on board or ashore, the detailed knowledge of their ship, cargo and treasure, landing sites and port cities remain little mentioned in the literature. Totally unpublished in France and containing 24 national and international contributions, this book presents both the main archaeological sites linked to piracy in the 17th-18th centuries through the cases of wrecks (Speaker 1702, Whydah Gally 1717 or Queen Anne's Revenge 1718) and land occupations (remains of camps and coastal defences) in the Caribbean-American and Indian Ocean area, but also the archaeological furniture discovered on these sites.
Enriched by a wide iconographic coverage, the study of the daily life of pirates focuses on groups of objects developed by the best specialists (pearls, weapons, coins, crockery or fauna) while trying to draw up the first archaeological syntheses while moving away from the popular folklore inherited from the 19th century.
