This publication, the fruit of doctoral research, primarily concentrates on Gallo-Roman sites in the Forest of Compiègne (Oise). It is a micro-regional study, both archaeological and numismatic, of part of the territory of the Suessiones in Gallia Belgica. The study material is mainly drawn from the excavations of the Second Empire, which were subsidised by Napoleon III. The archives and coins are stored at the Musée des Antiquités Nationales at Saint-Germain-en-Laye and at the Musée Antoine Vivenel at Compiègne.
The research and analysis of antique data, particularly that drawn from unpublished archives, articles in the local press of the period, and the publications of regional learned societies, rounds off the information available about 37 sites in the Forest of Compiègne and helps to define the history of the excavations of the Second Empire. Twenty other sites in the departments of Oise and Aisne have also been studied. A catalogue of 3000 Roman coins, previously unpublished, has been compiled and added to the antique finds, which have themselves been re-examined and corrected where necessary. All these coins from the group of sites in this study have next been analysed according to archaeological site-type: small town, potters’ settlements, other settlements, cemeteries and sanctuaries. They all testify not only to the development of sites close to the main road between Senlis and Soissons, known as the Chaussée Brunehaut, but also to important role played by waterways, the rivers Oise and Aines. The volume ends with some contributions to regional coin studies.
