This monograph, the fruit of a doctoral thesis, examines the adoption of a specifically Mediterranean utensil by the populations of central-eastern Gaul, between the last half of the 1st century BC and the middle of the 3rd century AD. Based on data collected from just over a hundred sites, most of them urban (oppidum, city capital, secondary settlement), each lamp identified is given a detailed typological reference. But this volume also, and above all, sets out to answer much broader questions.

The macroscopic observations made on the furniture are at the origin of the determination of production areas, some remote, others on the contrary, regional and local, which extend throughout the chronological framework selected. The identification of distribution channels reveals hitherto little-known economic dynamics, sometimes marked by the influence of neighboring pharmacies. Supply patterns emerge, enabling us to examine in detail the impact on consumption sites, and the role played by the main ancient traffic routes (land and river).

The other main theme is the role played by terracotta lamps in people's daily lives. The contexts studied provide valuable insights into the ethnic identity of the first users, their environment and their way of life. Emphasis is also placed on the luminaire's active role as a symbolic object in funerary and religious rites. As a result, various specific aspects (deliberate breakage, medallion cut-outs) now find a remarkable counterpart in other large ensembles spread along the middle Rhône valley, implying here an undeniable cultural link between Southern and Inner Gaul. At the same time, the documentation also gives us a glimpse of the close link between cult practices and craft activities.

All in all, this regional synthesis offers a renewed vision of what we've learned, and paves the way for the exploration of new avenues of thought in the field of modern lychnology.
