The Instrumentum International Meetings on the theme of Modes of Transport in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Equipment and maintenance of land, river and sea vehicles took place from June 14 to 16, 2017, at the Departmental Museum of Ancient Arles (Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, FR). The objective was to address the theme of the transport of people and goods, through the prism of archaeological remains of furniture. The contributions gathered in this volume concern various sites (habitats, burials, roads and port areas) located in France, with some incursions on a European scale, in Belgium and Italy. They concern Antiquity and the Middle Ages, sometimes with a global vision over a long period of time, in diachrony. A first part is devoted to ground transportation and takes into account vehicles (architecture and fittings) and mounts (harnessing and coupling). The second part deals with transport by waterways, in river and sea environments, the setting in motion of boats, fittings and anchoring parts, maintenance and navigation tools. This book provides the reader with an unusual overview of modes of transport at different periods by giving a privileged place to the "small pieces of furniture" unearthed on archaeological sites, in order to allow their recognition and interpretation, on the one hand, and on the other hand to visualize, through reconstructions and experiments, their place and role in the equipment and use of vehicles, whether they are land, river or maritime.
